Panchakarma(पंचकर्म) is an five natural therapy or procedures in ayurveda medical method. In this method, different types of procedures are used to eliminate disease and disease causes in the body and to balance the three doshas (i.e. Tridosha) in the form of Vata, Pitta, Kapha. The processes of these panchakarma are as follows

1. Vamana(emesis)

2. Virechana (purgation)

3. Basti karma(medicated enema)-Anuvasana

4. Basti Karma(medicated enema) – Niruha

5.Nasya karma

What is Panchakarma ?

Ayurveda Panchakarma medical practice is the oldest medical practices in india. It is very popular in the south part of india. This method is being used recently in North India. In this method, toxins from the body are purified by removing them. Panchakarma is a special medical method described in Ayurveda Shastra, which removes the doshas from the body and removes diseases at the root. It is a process of body cleansing, which is also beneficial for the healthy human being. It consists of five main karmas and two previous karmas performed before them.

Purva karma

Purakarma includes:

  • Snehana
  • Swedana

1. Snehana(Internal lubrication )

This condition is also performed externally on the body by abhyang (massage) of snehana dravya, etc. and using these substances also orally. In the treatment of some diseases, lubrication is also performed as the main function.

Four Sneha for Snehana(snehna dravya):-

(1) Ghrita (2) Taila(oil) (3) Vasa (4) Majja

Among them, Ghrita (Goghrit) is considered to have good affection.

2. Swedana(Sweating)

Swedana refers to the process by which sweat is produced. The action of producing sweat in the body by artificial measures is called Swedana.

Main Swedana Procedures:-

  • Ekanga Swedana : Sweating of Individual part of body
  • Sarvanga Swedana: full body sweating
  • Agni Swedana : Prepared by direct contact from fire
  • Nirgini Swedana : perspiration without contact with fire.

Pradhan Karma(Main therapy)

  • Vamana(emesis therapy or vometting)
  • Virechana( purgation)
  • Basti Karma(medicated enema) – Niruha
  • Basti karma(medicated enema/oil enema)-Anuvasana
  • Nasya karma

1. Vamana(emesis therapy or vometting)

The removal of dosha from the ascending path is called vomiting. That is, the removal of flaws orally by vomiting is called Vamanakarma. Vomana has been indicate for Kapha dosha.

2. Virechana( purgation)

Removal of dosha from the rectum is called virechanakarma. it is the main treatment of Pitta dosha.

3.Basti Karma(medicated enema) – Niruha

The enema is done by kasaya or kwath(decoction) preparation is called niruha/aasthapana basti karma.

4.Basti karma(medicated enema/oil enema)-Anuvasana

The enema is done by oil preparation is called Anuvasana basti karma.

5. Nasya karma

The medicine used by nasal is called Nasya karma. Nasal treatment is said to be the best for all diseases of the throat and head.

“Rakta Mokshyana” is also consider as Panchakarma according to the salyatantra.
