Learn what is acidity and it’s unsafe symptoms
We all suffer from acidity problem at any time or in our life. Acidity has many faces and all of them are inconvenient. It can serve as a cough and dizziness or a sudden burning sensation in the middle of the night, followed by a big, smooth meal, a constant pain in your chest at the office.
When the acid is leaked into the gollet (esophagus), that is, excessive secretion of the acid by the gastric glands of the stomach, the condition is known as acid reflux, commonly known as acidity. It can cause heartburn and abdominal pain. If the symptoms of acid reflux are more than twice a week, then you have acid reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Common causes of acidity
- Unhealthy lifestyle choices are the main cause of acidity. Consumption of certain foods may aggravate the problem.
- Overweight or obesity
- Long interval between meals
- Excess intake of tea or coffee on empty stomach
- Skipping meals
- Eat heavy and lie on your back or bend your waist
- Eat certain foods such as lemon, tomatoes, chocolate, peppermint, garlic, onion or spicy foods
- Drink some drinks such as alcohol, carbonated drinks, coffee or tea
- Take aspirin, ibuprofen, muscle relaxant or blood pressure medicine
Symptoms of acidity
Pain or discomfort in your stomach or your stomach is known as heartburn. If you have acidity, this is the most common symptom. You may also have a sore throat. Despite its name, heartburn does not affect your heart.
Pain in chest

Some foods can worsen the symptoms of acid reflux. To reduce your symptoms, try to avoid:
- Caffeinated drinks or alcohol
- Spicy, fatty or fried foods
- Garlic and onion
